How to know if a book is worth selling on Amazon (the 4-number check)
You're standing in a thrift store (or staring at an eBay lot) holding a book. Buy it or skip it? Don't guess, and don't trust a single "score." Four numbers tell you almost everything. Here's the check that experienced book flippers run in seconds.
The 4 numbers that decide it
1. Sales rank → but really, sell-through
Amazon's Best Sellers Rank (BSR) is a snapshot, and on its own it's misleading. What you actually want is how often the book sells — read it from 180-day sales-rank drops (each drop ≈ a sale). A rank of 40,000 in Books that drops 200+ times in 6 months is a fast mover; a rank of 40,000 that barely drops is a trap. Rule of thumb: for standard books, look for steady, recent drops — not a flattering one-time rank.
2. The real net profit (after every fee)
The price you'll sell at is not your profit. Subtract:
- Referral fee (15% for books)
- FBA pick&pack (by weight) or your Media Mail cost if FBM
- The $1.80 media closing fee (books, CDs, DVDs)
- Inbound shipping (FBA)
What's left, minus what you paid, is the real number. A $25 sell price on a $4 book is not a $21 profit — it's closer to $9–12 after fees. If you're not subtracting fees, you're not calculating profit.
3. ROI, not just dollars
$10 profit on a $40 book (25% ROI) is a different decision than $10 on a $4 book (250% ROI). Low-cost, high-ROI books recycle your capital faster — which matters more than a big per-unit dollar figure when you're scaling. Filter on ROI%, not just profit.
4. Competition (offer depth + Amazon on the listing)
Two killers: too many sellers (price will get driven down before your copy sells) and Amazon itself on the listing (you'll rarely win the Buy Box). Check the offer count and whether Amazon is a seller before you buy.
The traps that aren't on the price tag
- International editions and ex-library copies — often unsellable or restricted; a fast way to dead inventory.
- Wrong edition / ISBN match — the price you saw might be a different printing.
- Gating — you may not be allowed to list it.
A clean check catches these before your money's gone.
Do it in 5 seconds instead
Running four numbers (and the traps) by hand, on every book, is exactly the grind that burns sellers out. That's what our free book profit checker does instantly: paste an ISBN → real net profit for FBA and FBM, ROI, sell-through, break-even, and a buy/thin/skip verdict.

And if you'd rather skip the checking entirely: FlipClear hands you books that already pass all four — sourced for you, verified live, with the honest margin.
